Among an Increasing number of treatment apps, there’s also one for recording epilepsy

2020.06.01

There are various apps that make life easier, such as those for household accounts, schedules,
and recipe searches. There are more and more apps for health management, such as those
that record daily steps, those that record weight, body temperature, meals, sleep, etc.
And, recently, a further step in health management, such as a medicine notebook app, an app
that records blood pressure and blood sugar levels, an app that records headaches and chronic
pain, and an app that can search hospitals and arrange medical consultation with doctors. More
apps that support health are being released.
In March of this year, an app called “nanacara” was released for families of epilepsy patients.

An app for recording epileptic seizures

“Nanacara” is an app developed by an epilepsy patient’s family association in collaboration with
an IT venture company.
A feature of this app is that you can easily record epileptic seizures and medication history.
It has a mechanism which records a seizure automatically, immediately after you open the app..
You can also record it with a video or leave a memo.
You can also display the recorded information in a list, so that you can show it during a medical
examination.

For epilepsy, it is important to state the conditions at the time of the seizure

Epilepsy is a disease caused by excessive activity of nerve cells in the brain.
Symptoms vary depending on where the electrical stimulation of the cerebrum occurs, and
various symptoms such as convulsions, rigidity, brief loss of consciousness, changes in
sensation, and emotions may occur.

In the diagnosis of epilepsy, consider:
· Conditions at the time of the seizure
・Symptoms before a seizure
·Time elapsed during the seizure
· Factors that make seizures more likely
· Behavior during a seizure
It is useful to tell the doctor as much as possible about the subjective symptoms at the onset of
an attack and the symptoms seen by people close by.

In addition, the basic treatment of epilepsy is drug therapy using “antiepileptic drugs”, but there
are multiple types of antiepileptic drugs, and the first-line drug changes depending on the
seizure classification. Therefore, it is important for treatment to determine “what kind of attack it
was”.

Self-management is important in the course of chronic diseases

Epilepsy is a chronic disease of the brain, but it is said that 70 to 80% of people suffering from
seizures will be given treatment. However, the same thing can be said for any chronic illness, so
for the patient himself/herself to understand the illness and know how to deal with it (in the case
of epilepsy, knowing the triggers and signs of seizures), is very important.
One way is to use an app like “nanacara”. Of course, you can also keep a record by hand in a
notebook.

Particularly with the treatment of chronic diseases, the patient’s own self-management is
essential. While consulting with your family doctor, try to function with it so you can lead your
regular life, even if you have a chronic illness.
